It is estimated that worldwide about 1 in 100 children has autism *. This estimate represents an average figure, and there is significant variation in reported prevalence among different studies. However, certain well-conducted research has documented significantly elevated numbers. The occurrence of autism is not known in many low- and middle-income countries.
